At Home Care Assistance of Milwaukee, we work with amazing seniors who have shown us that as we age, we gain knowledge, wisdom, and a better understanding of the world around us. It is through these unique and treasured life experiences that we are able to create a narrative of beautiful and inspirational stories. Story Corps and National Public Radio have teamed up to share these cherished stories with the rest of the world.
Story Corps travels the country recording the stories of everyday people in an attempt to break boundaries like religion, age and gender so we can all be reminded of our shared humanity. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Millions can also listen to the Story Corps’ weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition. So what story do you want to tell?
Perhaps you want to remember a loved one or maybe you want to discuss love and war. Whatever the anecdote is that you or an aging loved one want to share with the world,it is Story Corps’ mission to help make sure you are heard. Not sure where to start? Ask a friend, family member or even a caregiver to help you prepare for your recording or interview. Here are a few of Story Corps’ suggested questions to help get you or an aging loved one thinking:
- Who has been the most important person in your life? Can you tell me about him or her?
- What was the happiest moment of your life? The saddest?
- Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?
Interested story-tellers can either record their narrative from home using a step-by-step guide online, catch the Story Corps’ traveling studio when it is in a city near them, or visit one of their three permanent locations in San Francisco, Chicago or Atlanta.
As a Milwaukee home care agency, we couldn’t be more supportive of such a great program and strongly support the initiatives set out by Story Corps. With so many amazing senior clients, we encourage them all to share their touching stories as we know they have the ability to touch the lives of others throughout the nation.
